"It's the most wonderful time of the year. With the kids jingle-belling and everyone telling you, be of good cheer. It's the most wonderful time of the year."
Ahh…the holidays. To me they truly are the most wonderful time of the year. I mean, what’s not to like? Christmas cookies…check! Eggnog….check! An excuse for shopping….check! However above all others, the best part of the holiday season (for me at least) is spending time with family and friends. Now like all things in life, this enjoyable occasion also has its drawbacks, one in particular being traveling. Well, this year you can keep your jacket and boots in the closet. How is that possible? By throwing a fabulous holiday party where you can gather all your loved ones in one location, thus releasing you from your traveling duties. Not sure how to throw a hoppin’ holiday shin-dig? Below are the ABC’s on how to host the perfect holiday party:
A is for Atmosphere - So many aspects contribute to the atmosphere of a good holiday party. Keep in mind, before your guests attend your party, they will gauge their first impressions based on the invitations you send. Because of this, you will want to select a unique invitation that truly fits your party’s theme. For example, if you are having a Christmas-themed party, select a Christmas invitation featuring a Christmas tree or ornaments. For more of a winter-themed event, consider using a snowflake or a snowman invitation. Once the invitations have been sent, you will want to focus on your music and decorations. Several holiday cds are filled with slow, holiday hymns, and although they may sound lovely and peaceful, consider using a mix of upbeat, non-traditional carols instead. Looking to liven things up? Hand out the lyrics to your favorite carols and encourage your guests to participate in a round of Caroling Karaoke (this usually goes over better after your guests have had a cocktail or two.) For your party decorations, keep it simple and clean. Find a bowl or vase, fill it with red and green holiday ornaments and…Voila! You have an instant centerpiece for your table. Poinsettias and wreaths are also great to use, and you can continue to find uses for them after the holidays are over.
B is for Budget - With all the gift-giving, traveling and entertaining involved, the holiday season can put a strain on anyone’s wallet. Be prepared this year and start the party planning process early. When purchasing decorations, try to choose classic, simple items (such as candles or white lights) that can be used after the holidays are over. For favors, choose something small and useful such as a cookie cutter, snowflake bookmark, or Christmas ornament. When making out your list of items to purchase, be sure to include food, favors, invitations and decorations. Just remember to keep track of how much you think everything will cost and try to stay as close to that budget as possible.
C is for Chow - No Christmas party is complete without good food. The key to a perfect party spread is to feature a majority of quick snacks and finger foods (such as fruit and veggie trays, cheese samplers, dips and cookies) and then add one or two dishes that really wow your guests. Some of my favorite recipes are Cranberry Baked Brie, Bacon-Wrapped Scallops, and Pecan-Crusted Spinach Artichoke Dip. All three of these recipes are amazing in appearance, but also a cinch to whip up just minutes before you guests arrive. Last but not least, a true holiday party has to have eggnog on hand, but be sure to carry other options (such as warm apple cider) for those wanting a non-alcoholic beverage.
And there you have it- three simple steps to holiday party success. Just remember to relax, have fun and crank up the carols. If you’re having a blast, your guests will too.
