Until recently, when I thought of pregnancy, thoughts of bottles, diapers and stretchy pants came to mind. Then, something very exciting happened. Not one, but two of the coolest women that I know announced their pregnancies. Both are due at the end of this year. Watching these two fashionable mommies-to-be made me view pregnancy in a whole new light. I realized that their expanding waistlines are not stopping them from wearing the clothes they always wore, and doing the things they love doing (with some exceptions of course). Now, instead of thinking of the best colors to decorate their living room, they are thinking of the best colors to decorate their nursery (and choosing adorable ones at that). In honor of the changing roles of moms-to-be, I bring you the changing rules of future parenthood!
• Out with Old Fashioned Maternity Clothes, In with Designer Clothes- I decided to check out what is offered in maternity gear these days. Gone are no-name elastic waist pants, in are designers like Diane Von Furstenburg, 7 For All Mankind, and True Religion, all making maternity clothes. Even Gap offers many of the same styles offered in their Women’s lines, from tees to dresses. I was very surprised by the amount of clothing offered in maternity styles. Also, because many of the styles of clothing are looser fitting these days, some clothing can double as maternity clothes, though it may not necessarily be designed to be maternity. It is a great time to be planning for a baby!
• Out with Boring Baby Clothes, In with Fun Designs in Cute Colors- I love some of the creative messages printed on onesies lately! They are hilarious! Some of my favorites are “Bald is Beautiful,” “It was the dog,” and “Poops, I did it again.” Baby clothes have always been adorable, but the newest baby clothes take cuteness to another level. Many designers are also releasing environmentally-friendly or organic lines of clothing for the parents who want their baby to go “green.” Baby clothes are also being made by more and more companies, such as C&C California, Ralph Lauren and more.
• Out with Bare Nurseries, In with Nurseries you want to show your friends- Designing your babies’ nursery is a process that parents to-be are having more and more fun with. Colors are becoming more and more playful, and correspond with color combinations that are generally in-style. One of my friends designed her nursery for her little baby girl using pink, white and green. She painted the walls pink and white striped. It looks amazing! My other friend does not want to know if the baby is a boy or a girl before the baby is born. In her case, pastel yellows or greens would work for her nursery.
• Out with Plain Baby Announcements, In with Playful Designs- The newest baby announcements have the latest and greatest trends in the invitation industry- layered paper, ribbon and die-cuts. Announcements are making use of color by using stripes, polka dots and flowers to add a splash of color and make your announcement stand out from the rest. Some of my favorites include Peek-A-Boo Chick, a baby chick inside an egg, complete with a real feather. I like this announcement simply for its uniqueness, and it would be appropriate for either a little boy or girl. For your little baby girl, my favorite is our Baby Pink Flower with Ribbon announcement. It incorporates a color combination that I love (mocha and pink) and I adore the ribbon (which comes pre-tied, for moms who are busy with their newborns). For your little sailor, I love the Sailboat announcement. I love the colors, and the final product is beautiful!
So, where are all these changes coming from? Well, I would guess that celebrity moms are changing the view of all things mommy. Celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Garner, Reese Witherspoon and Halle Barry are changing the face of motherhood, one designer diaper bag at a time. So why can’t you?
