"Writing your Graduation Thank You Cards"What to Say and How to Say it

Author: Jennifer - Director of Operations

So, you've done it. You've graduated- Congratulations! Now that the ceremony is over, the party is done and the gifts have been received, it's time to turn your attention to your thank you notes. Some dread this task and it's true that it can be time-consuming. However, if you stay organized and break up the task, it is much more manageable.  Here are some answers to commonly asked thank you card questions:

  • When do I need to mail out my thank you cards by?

Etiquette says to try your best to get your thank you cards in the mail within a month of your graduation. Try to make a month after graduation your goal to get your thank you cards out. If you can't do it in a month, don't worry. Getting them out as soon as possible will work too. Just try not to let too much time go by.

  • What is the best way to organize my thank you cards?

Your best way depends on how you like to organize your tasks. I would suggest making a list of all of your guests and the corresponding gifts that they gave you. Start at the top of the list and do a certain number of thank you cards per day, and hold yourself to it. Seeing the progress that you are making daily will help keep you motivated to finish.

  • What do I say to those who gave me money rather than a gift?  What do I say for regular gifts?

For regular gifts, you could say something like this:
Dear Aunt Elizabeth,
Thank you so much for the towels and sheet set. I will get a lot of use out of it in my dorm room. Thank you also for sharing in my graduation. It meant a lot to me that you shared in my graduation day.
The idea is to thank the person for the gift and for attending your graduation.
For gifts of money, you could say something like this:
Dear Grandma and Grandpa,
Thank you so much for coming to my graduation ceremony. It would not have been the same without you.  Also, thank you for the money.  I will certainly make good use of it next year on books!  Thanks again!
For gifts of money, the only difference is that you may want to say what you are going to use the money for, but you don't have to.

  • What should I use for my thank you cards?

It completely depends on what you like and what you are looking for.  InvitationConsultants.com offers many college-themed stationery that would be perfect for a high school or college graduate.  We also have a selection of graduation-themed thank you notes, with some even offering your choice of a photo!  Or if you are looking for something more tropical, floral or traditional, we have those too!

So now all you need to get started is a list of your gifts, thank you cards, and some time.  Don't worry, it won't be as bad as you think.  In fact, when it's all over, you will feel a sense of relief, and you can enjoy the gifts you received!
